How to get your business cited by ChatGPT and AI search
AI assistants cite pages that answer one question clearly, with structure, facts and a source they can verify. Here is how to make yours citable.
More and more people ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling a results page, and the assistant names a handful of sources. Getting cited is not a trick: AI systems favour pages that answer a specific question directly, in clear structure, with facts they can verify. This guide explains what makes a page citable and what to change on yours.
- ✓Write one page per question, and answer it in the first two sentences.
- ✓Use question headings and short self-contained sections.
- ✓Concrete numbers and named sources get quoted, vague claims do not.
How do AI assistants choose which sources to cite?
AI assistants pull from search results and from their own index, then quote the passages that most directly answer the user’s question. They favour text that is unambiguous, self-contained and easy to attribute.
That means the unit of value is the passage, not the page. A single paragraph that fully answers a question can be cited even if the rest of the page is ignored.
What makes a page easy for an AI to quote?
The patterns that work are consistent across assistants:
- Headings phrased as the question a real person would ask.
- A direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading.
- Sections that make sense on their own, without the paragraph above.
- Specific numbers, ranges and dates rather than vague adjectives.
- Plain language, short sentences, no marketing padding.
- Tables for comparisons, which get extracted particularly well.
Is this different from normal SEO?
It overlaps heavily but not completely. Classic SEO optimises for a click: a compelling title that earns the visit. Optimising for AI search means optimising to be quoted, which rewards clarity and completeness over intrigue.
The good news is that the two rarely conflict. Pages written to be quoted tend to rank well too, because they genuinely answer the question.
What technical work actually helps?
A few technical foundations make a real difference:
- Structured data such as Article, FAQPage and Organization, so machines understand what the page is.
- A clean sitemap listing every page you want indexed, in every language.
- Fast, server-rendered pages, because content hidden behind heavy scripts may not be read.
- A consistent author and organisation identity across the site.
- Submitting new URLs through IndexNow, which feeds Bing and therefore several AI products.
How long does it take to start being cited?
Expect months rather than weeks. Assistants need your pages to be crawled, indexed and then judged relevant to a question someone actually asks. New sites with little authority wait longer.
The practical approach is to build a small library of pages that each own one question completely, then keep them accurate. Depth on a narrow set of questions beats thin coverage of many.
